Re: Section 230 is in trouble -- at last !

Techdirt gives WMF "VP of Global Advocacy" Rebecca MacKinnon a podcast entry to spew the usual nuance-free Wikipedia propaganda and deplore Section 230 repeal attempts. Sometimes this smells like a religious war; neither side shows any "nuance" about the dispute. https://www.techdirt.com/2024/04/16/...

Re: Paid Editing on WP is permissible

I would tell you about the "prominent jazz guitarist" who wrote his own BLP and was totally ignored.

But it's just too cringe. Plus he's a customer of my products, who does NOT know what he's doing.

Re: Katherine Maher Named C.E.O. of NPR

Maher has had an interesting start at NPR. A week ago, one of her senior editors published an essay criticizing his employer for engaging in shamelessly biased reporting: https://www.thefp.com/p/npr-editor-how-npr-lost-americas-trust Maher responded by blocking him for five days: https://www.washin...

Re: Former steward Mardetanha (of Farsi Wikipedia) globally banned by WMF

In the past Mardetanha was mentioned on the Signpost , repeatedly, but only in passing as a "trusted steward". Never as the subject of a scandal or other "bad news". Similar results on noticeboards. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?fulltext=Go&fulltext=Search&prefix=WP%3A&search=mardetan...

Re: Other Wikis That Have Bad Mods

Fandom.com (formerly Wikia) is a complete sewer, and has been a sewer since it was started by Jimbo Wales and Anglea Beesley in 2004. Oh, the things I could tell you about them. (And there are a million things I CAN'T tell you, because they run in a completely opaque manner. There is no noticeboard ...

It's extremely dated but should not be overlooked https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators_willing_to_make_difficult_blocks Also horribly dated and useless, but often a place where the biggest "evil patrollers" show up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_administrator_hope...

Re: Molly White is running a blog bitching about NFTs and crypto

Nevermind my mom texted me the bankman story unprompted so its like the only crypto story she knows now. News was bombarded with stories after his sentencing trying to make this out like an Enron. I don't even know anyone who used the exchange. Mostly because it was little mentioned, except in busi...

Re: Crap or questionable articles

Which reminds me:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erick_Jones

Saw this and posted it on my blog, because it's funny. "Resume packing works!"

The bulk of Jones's article was written by Dhavalpatel698 in 2019. Student or staff? Or paid 3rd party editing?

Re: Crap or questionable articles

Did anyone mention Didier Raoult yet? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Didier_Raoult 45k bytes of mostly-raging about a now-retired academic figure who did some very sloppy research. He's not the first and won't be the last--this kind of thing happens routinely thanks to general arrogance, plus the sav...
