The description of the "new features for new editors":
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Growth/Feature_summary
Watch as thousands of newbies show up, struggle with the usual crappy Wikimedia code, and give up in disgust. Or get blocked by a shithead admin for "disruption" or something. Editing a page was very simple before 2008--since then they have added more and more fat to the edit function.
Mentoring new editors has been a shitshow to date. No one wants to mentor anyone else, unless they can also get their support in the usual stupid content editwars. Helping new editors is usually only done because someone WANTS something in return. I fully expect this stuff will make mentoring even worse.
Furthermore, I will bet they only added this because it also secretly and automatically reports new-user activity to an admin. To make their job of harassing new users soooo much easier. How clever. Arrrrrrgh.

Search this forum for the word "Essjay".
And don't be a knucklehead. You can easily answer your own questions by looking thru old threads, here and on Wikipediocracy and on whatever's left of Wikipedia Review.
