Putin calls for a "reliable" russian Wikipedia

Because no one else is doing it--not even the media.

Putin calls for a "reliable" russian Wikipedia

Post by Kumioko » Wed Nov 06, 2019 12:43 pm

In the news today are a number of articles about the topic besides the one I posted below. Now I wouldn't consider a Putin sponsored Wikipedia to be reliable, but as a large country, with centuries of history and growing influence in the world, it could add some competition to the existing Wikipedia.

Is it meant to be a Russian language site, an English site, or a multi-language exercise?

Just a detail that probably needs clarfication, to assess "it could add some competition to the existing Wikipedia".

I mean, you'll not have missed an important detail like that, surely?

The 2 billion ruble ($30 million) project is expected to launch at the tail end of 2022, RBC reported. The online encyclopedia will reportedly contain more than 80,000 articles from the 35-volume Great Russian Encyclopedia.

Wikipedia has some blurb about the Great Russian Encyclopedia:

Yeah I was just reading several and was going to respond to crows question. I don't see anything that says it will only be in Russian. I mean certainly it will be, but it also makes a lot of sense for them to do an English version as well eventually.
