Facebook and Twitter ‘should use volunteer moderators’ says Wikipedia founder

Because no one else is doing it--not even the media.

Facebook and Twitter ‘should use volunteer moderators’ says Wikipedia founder

Facebook and Twitter should adopt Wikipedia’s approach to battling online abuse and misinformation by deploying thousands of volunteer moderators to monitor controversial posts, according to the digital encyclopedia’s founder.

Jimmy Wales said the scale of the problem facing social media companies was underlined when he had to personally ask Twitter’s chief executive, Jack Dorsey, to deal with a particularly vicious online troll, after the company’s initial response was to do nothing.

“If you are failing me, you are definitely failing a teenager who is being abused by someone [online],” he said.
Lolwut?

Is this the same Wikipedia that doesn't even have a 'report this post/user' button?

Is this the same Wikipedia that has often seen Jimmy himself have to get personally involved to address an article inaccuracy at the personal request of the affected person?

Is this the same Wikipedia that lets thirteen year old girls be Administrators, leaving their parents in the dark as to why their daughter is crying in her room every night?

Is this the same Wikipedia that has been the subject of countless media reports regarding its toxic environment?

Is this the same Wikipedia whose volunteer moderators have explicitly decided that telling another user to fuck off, and repeatedly, is not something they would block them for?

Is this the same Wikipedia that deals with transphobic abuse by a veteran editor with a paltry 48 hour block? And then doesn't block him indefinitely even after he embarks a months long campaign of soapboxing and gaslighting and undermining moderators authority, rather than just admit what he did and apologise (or properly file a grievance if he feels unfairly treated)?

Is this the same Wikipedia whose biography of Marek Kukula is the epitome of doing nothing in the face of an online threat to children?

Is this Jimmy Wales, former Guardian Media Group Board member, yet again getting a free platform in the pages of The Guardian to talk absolute fucking shite about Wikipedia?

These are all things you could and probably should have heard being said on Wikipediocracy, if they had a fucking clue. If they cared about things like child safety.

Some people deserve getting shot with shit. Because they fucking suck at what they claim is their area of expertise, and they're too proud or vain or corrupt to admit it.

Into the sea with them all.

Jimbo must not even use Facebook since he'd know that at least most groups are run and moderated by unpaid volunteers but of course the fb AI will still override them

As always, The Chief Wiki Fucknozzle has no clue how Shitter or FB works/fails.

I bet $100 he saw someone attacking him on Twitter, called Jack Dorsey PERSONALLY, and demanded they ban the critic. And Dorsey ignored him. This would also be classic Jimbo and classic Dorsey. Betcha.

Also betcha he has no idea what's happening on FB, because he can't get Zucc's personal phone number.....the little chode only interfaces with online services he can try to manipulate. Using his "sparkly jimbo magic".

And OF COURSE this "news shit" only appeared in the Guardian, the Glorious Jimbo's "captive newspaperthing". How craven.

Bah.

also, good catch old salt. I generally can't stand to look at the Guardian's website. Their news is shaky and their editorials are bluntly embarrassing. I wonder how many actual serious leftists have given up on reading the Guardian because they constantly give raving extreme crackpots column space.
