Because no one else is doing it--not even the media.

A followup:
https://slate.com/technology/2018/10/am ... ation.htmlhttps://news.slashdot.org/story/18/10/1 ... volunteersA report from TechCrunch earlier this year
pointed out that Amazon is the only one of the big tech players not found on Wikimedia's 2017-2018 corporate donor list -- one that includes Apple, Google, and even Amazon's Seattle-based sibling Microsoft, all of which matched employee donations to the tune of $50,000.
I dunno, that's some pretty ripe lol. ALL of those damn corporations are exploiting Wikipedia content, and not paying the reasonable market price for it. If each of them had to hire thousands of people to develop the content they scrape from Wikipedia, it would cost them billions. They don't give a shit about WP's content quality or biases because they're getting a massive bargain.

Zero dollars is the market value of Wikipedia's junk pile.
They are not paying for the content, it is more like a thankyou payment. As such, we can surmise they are paying 1% of the actual market value of what they are gaining from using Wikipedia.
The WMF knows this but happily take it because something is better than nothing, they're just not telling the Wikipedians. Would you?

A site that's built up mostly by unpaid and un-gratified volunteers. Amen to that statement.

Also another reason to boycott Amazon. I stopped selling there years ago ever since delivery services started charging for distance shipping.
I also almost never buy unless they've got something that the nearest retail store can't provide.
They also sell products form cruelty and exploitation.
I'd recommend from an online retail store on the specific category of products you're looking.
So if you want to buy games, go to ebgames store. If you want to buy aviation merchandise, go to an online aviation store.
Cause if you buy from Amazon, you'd know where your precious $$$ are going.
