"The Group" Film Vassar Nope

Post by wexter » Fri Aug 12, 2022 7:05 pm

Watching a very dated movie on Amazon called "The Group" about a group of 1933 Graduates from Vassar (which at the time was an all female school). Evidently, "The Group" spoke to social taboos impacting women from 1933 to WWII, and the work was highly relevant in the 1960's.

"The group" speaks to actual issues and cultural morays; now all you have to do is declare that you are "something or other" and it's true; its so true you can "take issue" with anyone bucking your reality or narrative. You can even file a discrimination, or civil right, complaint against your employer based on your own Kool-aid. We have devolved from can-do and making stuff to making bleating noises.

Wikipedia has mixed feelings about Vassar being Vassar, frigidity, and lesbianism. Of course Wikipedia is 99%+ wrong on everything as proved by their own statistics and admission.

Any fool or mental case can (and does) edit or administer Wikipedia. In contrast a well published expert in literature wrote the Britannica entry.

The Group, novel by Mary McCarthy, published in 1963, that chronicles the lives of eight Vassar College friends from their graduation in 1933 to the funeral of Kay Strong, the protagonist, in 1940.

The women believe that their superior education has given them control over their lives and the ability to break down existing taboos and limitations. They all believe in progress, modernity, marrying well, and accumulating wealth and possessions.

Vassar - Yep - autobiographical

For McCarthy's Vassar contemporaries, many of whom appeared as recognizable characters in the novel, it was difficult not to feel that old scores were being settled. To them, McCarthy's satirical tone seemed perilously close to naked contempt
