Carlossuarrez46 banned for calling out the racism of the Wikipedia community

Post by Jake Is A Sellout » Fri Apr 09, 2021 2:36 am

Prolific content creator Carlossuarrez46 got dragged to the Administrators Noticeboard and got chewed out for apparently not being sufficiently helpful in clearing up what others had called his mess, namely thousands of apparently poorly sourced stub articles.

We'll look past the obvious racism inherent in the fact that if you're not Latino, if you are for example some white prat of a prolific content creator who calls himself Dr. Blofeld, the majority white community isn't going to say boo to you when you basically decide that no, you want no part in cleaning up your mess.

And it should be noted that in that case, the white man's mess was a mess that had potential legal implications for Wikipedia (industrial scale copyright breaches), whereas poor old Carlos had simply inserted some potentially fake information into Wikipedia on an industrial scale. Which, if that were a legal issue for the Foundation, well, maybe the world would have never had to suffer Wikipedia to begin with.

But yes, Carlos is now gone, kicked out of Wikipedia for his lack of decorum when he responded to charges thusly......
Wondering whether a non-Latino would face this... Wikiracism at its worst.
I'm sufficiently pissed off at the blatant racism and attacks that I really don't care what more you do. You all have sullied WP.
The Wikipedians of course absolutely lost their minds at being accused of racism and demanded justice in the form of his head, but then again, white men tend to do that.

Before you so quickly dismiss these accusations as the desperation of a man at the end of a rope, consider this......

1. Carlos was a very experienced Wikipedian, so he likely knew what usually happens when other Wikipedians are accused of making big messes, especially when there is a good amount of debate to be had over the specifics, so he likely had a good baseline for what usually happens to white men, with which to judge his specific experience.

2. Carlos is perfectly entitled to state he feels like has been the victim of racism at the hands of the community. To use common parlance, it is his truth. This is no more of a personal attack than when Jess Wade shoots her ignorant mouth off in the media about the sexism that supposedly underpins every single one of the bad things that have happened to her on Wikipedia. It only becomes a personal attack if you accuse individuals, and Carlos probably knows fine well that on Wikipedia, even a woman, like Jess, as long as she is white, has been allowed to get away with accusing named individuals of sexism, without offering any evidence whatsoever. Carlos perhaps rightly wondered if the same privilege would be afforded to User:JennyFromDaBlock

3. I am quite certain that not a single member of the Arbitration Committee that has just banned Carlos for his intemperate remarks, is actually Latino. So I am quite certain they are not qualified to know whether a Latino person is actually seeing evidence of racism in the community reaction to his alleged crimes, or whether he is just being loco. I think it's a safe bet that the proportion of Latinos in the Admin corps too, is probably quite small, far below the representative average, and small enough that they were likely all on a Siesta during the brief time Carlos was being raked over the coals by the majority white male community.

For those who want to quibble over whether Carlos has actually been banned, or has simply been temporarily demoted and told he can't edit unretire without attending the ArbCom case that was accepted in large part because he accused the community of racism, I would say you are dreaming if you think there is any prospect of him coming out of that case as an innocent man, with his accusations wholly vindicated and his status as an Admin restored.

Wikipedia is a white man's playground. An excuse/pretext/reading of the evidence would've been found to justify his demotion after the fact. It would be a white man's jury, applying white man's justice. You can see it in how the case has been handled thus far. I would suggest it's not normal for white users in similar positions to have their Admin powers "temporarily suspended" until such time as their actual guilt can be ascertained.

Unlike the famous black Jew Admin Malik Shabbaz who had friends in high places and was much prized by the whites for his token qualities, Carlos hadn't been blocked for being a racist prick before his case was sent to ArbCom, and ArbCom didn't temporarily suspend Carlos because they feared his accusations of racism stemmed from some temporary break from reality.

And of course, unlike the black Jew, it seems highly doubtful that Carlos would come out the other side of this with a member of the Arbitration Committee quietly and secretly arranging for their reinstatement, if they wanted it, "no questions asked". No questions asked, not even, "do you still feel those who blocked you and sent you to ArbCom, were being racists?"

As with many sections of life, and on Wikipedia, we can see that the humble Latino who just wants to quietly get on with his extremely low paid and thankless menial task, is treated very differently to the white men and Uncle Toms he shares office space with.
