Ok, this is definitive proof. Dronebogus and "Dronebogus1"'s sock made an edit to the same obscure article within a month of each. And why might you ask did he edit this obscure article? Because it was used to make one of the Wikipe-tan images. To make it even more conclusive, the sock was actually the one to edit first, so it couldn't just be an impersonator.

I looked at a few but they make me uncomfortable. And this is the guy who's been brought to ANI multiple times for his "apparent self-appointment as Wikipedia's witchfinder general", which mostly takes the form of sanctimoniously policing userpages.

In one of these ANI discussions I noticed a couple of sockpuppets that were obvious "impersonators", which functioned to make Dronebogus look a little more sympathetic. That's in line with the behavior you mentioned. I'll stumble across it again eventually.
