Arthur Rubin gets desysopped...finally

Post by Kumioko » Sat Oct 21, 2017 12:26 pm

The English Wikipedia Arbitration committee has finally desysopped longtime problematic admin Arthur Rubin after yet another case regarding their conduct. See the link here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Arthur_Rubin

For most of us, this name is very familiar and has often been a topic on other criticism websites. For those that aren't familiar with this longtime problematic admin you are missing out on a lot of drama, multiple Arbcom cases and a very long history.

One thing is for sure, this was a longtime coming and the mere fact that it took the Arbcom this long to finally get around to desysopping them only shows how truly incompetent the Arbcom is and how truly hard it is to desysop a bad admin on the English Wikipedia.

From the book wiki:
One of the few Wikipedians with a Wikipedia biography, who actually deserves to have a biography. Rubin, the son of two prominent mathematics professors, won the Putnam Fellowship four times and is now a semi-employed engineer and occasional politician with the Libertarian Party. He first appeared on Wikipedia in 2005, worked on mathematics content almost exclusively, and won adminship in July 2006. In short, the "perfect Wikipedian".

The comment "he is a friendly and thoughtful person" would later haunt Wikipedia. Because Rubin tends to concentrate on content (unusually for administrators this late in WP's history) and patrols vandalism/deletes articles quickly, he has gotten into a number of squabbles and been dragged into/commented on a list of arbitrations. Many, many people dislike him. And of course, the other administrators protect him.[95][96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109]

Numerous attempts to delete his Wikipedia bio have failed.[110][111] He doesn't mind editing and protecting his own bio.[112] And, he dislikes Betacommand.[113]

In January 2007, Rubin was involved in the editwar over the Barrett vs. Rosenthal article. Having fought with one of the combatants on Usenet previously. "As an additional note, I have been arguing with Ilena on Usenet for a number of years. I list this in the interest of full disclosure, as I don't think it's affected my actions here." He has done some remarkably stupid things using his sysop powers.

In June 2009, as a result of his editwarring with others over the "date delinking" nonsense, he was "admonished". He was also involved in the August 2013 "Tea party movement" arbitration, predictably for a libertarian extremist. Plus, he had fought over "race and intelligence" articles. Somehow he managed to avoid taking responsibility in these latter cases.

And in December 2013, he was dragged off to Arbitration Enforcement yet again. This time, two of the administrators who were fighting with him, Georgewilliamherbert and Seraphimblade, started to comment -- and reversed themselves, because all three were running for Arbcom at the time. Arthur ended up blocked for a week, and lost the election too.

The final insult, a 2015 scandal that erupted on Daily Kos about COI abuse on Koch-related articles. One of the protectors thereof: Rubin.

Thanks, adding the desysop to the database....
