ideally archive.org survives this and also comes up with a way for people to text search what is likely the most valuable collection of non-scientific info on the web.

I know just as much as you do about how they store their data. There's been public speculation about what could happen to the data if they closed shop. The main issue is the dataset is so large it's not possible to offer a backup of the entire thing to random people. In recent weeks, archive.org has gone temporarily offline due to random individual scrapers overloading the system trying to back things up if the worst case scenario happens.

Most browsers have a 'save page' option, which you can use either on the original page or the wayback machine backup. It saves the page in such a way that you can browse it on your disk.

However, if you want to save something that might be of legal use later, it's a better idea to re-archive the original page on archive.today. Or if that's not possible to re-archive the original page on archive.today.
