The Kamala Harris campaign, campaigning primarily on abortion, was a historic loss, outspending Trump by almost 4x and raising over a billion dollars from corporations, billionaires, millionaires, and everyday people.
Jill Stein came in third, marking the first time in 24 years the Green Party came in third place, overtaking a Libertarian Party which came in 5th place. RFK Jr came in 4th, despite dropping out. RFK Jr. endorsed Trump before votes were cast in order to have a cabinet position in Trump's white house, and if he is successful, could have been one of the most shrewd political decisions in recent memory.
Harris' poll numbers started slipping continuously almost directly after a vice presidential debate, after her pick Tim Walz appeared agitated, confused, and ignorant on important issues. And who's main strategy was to simply call his opponents 'weird' before his miserable debate performance.
Alternatively: Trump was selected by the powers that be as the next president because his "right wing" persona and party affiliation are a better match with present foreign policy "needs" (sponsoring Israel's ethnic cleansing in spite of international law, domestic law, the American public interest, and common decency itself). Otherwise there would be significant dissonance between the leadership's (farcical) public image and the policies they uphold/impose.* I'm sure that other things are taken into account as well but I suspect they put a high priority on maintaining consistency of narrative and avoid contradicting the left/right tropes they've installed in the public consciousness.
It seems plausible enough. Within certain limits, it would not be hard to ignore the public's vote and simply install whoever happens to be expedient at the time. They do it in other nations so I doubt they'd have any scruples about doing it here.
* Or perhaps I should say that it would be more obvious. It goes from being sophistry to bald-faced fraud. Perhaps it doesn't matter though - I can make a solid argument either way, for whatever that's worth.

Re: USA General Election 2024
It's worth noting that after the Libertarian Party's presidential run, the party chair is now stating she no longer intends to run genuine candidates. Only insincere ones intended to manipulate the vote in favor of whatever major party they like the most in a given election.
In other words, if they like a Democratic candidate, they said they would run a Republican-oriented presidential campaign. And if they like a Repubilcan candidate, they will run a Democratic-oriented presidential campaign. The party chair and its delegates have full control over who they nominate because the member vote on nominees isn't binding and is almost never taken into consideration.
This is not misinterpretation or propaganda on my part. You can see her discuss this on her YouTube videos and her Twitter extensively.
