Re: Proposal for Closing Wikinews
I should point out:
-this was almost entirely the work of longtime WP editing addict Koavf.
-basically all of the criticisms are accurate, although I might add the Russian Wikinews is said to be controlled by Russian propaganda people. "It looks like they just use the RSS feeds automatically generated by every MediaWiki page: ru:Викиновости:Трансляции." The front page of en-WN has not been updated since July 2, and does not mention the Texas floods at present. It's just as embarrassing as ever.
-he completely neglects to mention that en-WN is dysfunctional and little used partly because, for most of its history, it was run by crazy bastards. Insert the names "Brian McNeil", "Cirt", "Laura Hale" and "Pi zero" if you need past examples.
-en-WN currently has 17 administrators, 12 of whom gave up in 2023 or 2024. And they still have no Arbcom or mediation system, due to lack of interest.
The proposal was reposted on their "Water Cooler" noticeboard. And also here. The only votes to keep it open came from the few current Wikinews editing addicts, like Michael.C.Wright, Gryllida and BigKrow. No one else really seems to care.
Wikinews was always a joke. But it will be kept open, because a few head-cases will demand it be kept open. A failed project that the WMF kept open because it cost almost nothing to keep alive--and it attracts a few fanatical nerds.
What about Wiktionary? Read this thread from 2023. PS: I'm now quite sure that "Equinox" is the former abusive Wiktionary admin Encyclopetey, aka Brian Speer. He just can't stop abusing people.
