Wikipedia has cancer

Post by Graaf Statler » Wed Mar 11, 2020 10:23 am

Madam pointed at this interesting Signpost article of Guy Macon.

Nothing can grow forever, even cancer.
If we want to avoid disaster, we need to start shrinking the cancer now, before it is too late. We should make spending transparent, publish a detailed account of what the money is being spent on and answer any reasonable questions asking for more details. We should freeze spending increases to no more than inflation plus a percent or two, build up our endowment, and restructure the endowment so that the WMF cannot dip into the principal when times get bad.
Really, nothing.

(The logo is protected)

Nothing, really nothing, nothing can grow for ever, Guy is right.
Not the growing perverse money streams, not the wiki data sausage factory, nothing.

So what are we doing here?

The same as what the people in the Decameron did. We are just waiting.
Enjoying the view, chat a bit, tell each other story's to kill the time.
We are waiting here for the end.

The end of the corona virus epidemic, the end of the wiki data sausage factory.
Because nothing can grow for ever as Guy claims, there is always a end.

It is only very hard to predict when that end comes, but I guarantee you all, it will come.

Incredible bullshit article, classic Wikiipediocy, clueless about the real issues. The WMF is behaving like nearly all nonprofit corporations that are not directly responsible to the members, and "increasing the endowment" increases the independence of the WMF. It is all completely predictable for those who study organizations and organizational structure.

To reform this would require the commumity organizing independently, and all efforts to do that have either been crushed as quickly as possible -- by the community! -- or have attracted no interest ("What's in it for me?"). So then people resort to the standard state of the disempowered, they whine about it, hoping that the whining will irritate those with power enough that they will straighten up and fly right. Which never works, but hope springs eternal in those who never grew up.

As I pointed here out is one of the main reasons of the downward spiral of a wiki the perverse money stream from WMF to the chapters.
The wrong people are rewarded. People who are often not even or hardly active on wikipedia, or not anymore, who have often a personal agenda, and who are seldom/never suitable for the job.

Nepotism is the keyword in this process.

So, the article of Guy is in no way bullshit!

*Because of all that interests of people in and outside the wiki, a community can never reorganise itself independently!

*Because people who have often nothing to do with the wiki or who do some stupide, useless bot work does't allowed that!

*They are the ones who receive the rewards!

*A wiki become a fossil in this way!

The increasing amount of money in combination of the increasing bureaucracy of bullshit jobs in and outside a wiki destroy the wiki!
Special because WMF also start in the same way with nepotism and bullshit jobs, it becomes a bigger and bigger bureaucracy of incompetent people.

People who start all kind of strategies what never will work in practice. Because they are complete incompetent

So, the increasing amound of money is a two-stage rocket in the downward circling of a wiki.

And if a wiki was already in a deadly spin like the Dutch wiki, because the first crisis/chapter war was from before 2009 when I came in the wiki house, the money works out as a super catalyst. It push the nose constant to the ground. Because not the wiki is anymore the goal, no the Chapter with the meat pots.

I hope this is understandable, it is hard to explane for me this in English.
Ask what is not clear please.

This immediately attracted the attention of the Vilignat. Graaf has been representing that he has some kind of administrative power here, and he does, the same as any user. "Side admin" means someone who notifies admins of a problem. See Vilignat's comments, vilirant, and below that. As well, the comment above links to a post here by Graaf.
Of course, he did make it up. There is nothing in that post by Graaf indicating despondence. As always, Vilignat interprets everything contemptuously. He's a true hater, mindlessly dedicated to attack, and deliberately deceptive.
