I'd be interested in a European perspective of how the free culture movement there related to the 1960s counter-culture and the influences of those on the Wikimedia movement in Europe.

It is. The hippie mouvment came over to Europe, from Amerika. It was reaction on the Vietnam war. Make love, no war. That's the reason sweet sex with Lenard Cohen music at the background and girls black kohl around there eyes was common. Think of John Lennon and Joko Onno. Floral power, make love, now war. Drug and rosse, and Freedom.
This movement changed in the ultra left Squatting mouvment, and later the punk scene. But the base, the freedom of the hippies never disappeared out of this movements, and is the base of the free movements. Outlaw. Protest! Freedom!

but before that we had the Provo mouvment.

Europe is a mix from very leftish, conservative, chaos, wars, Napoleon, Hitler, individual country's fighting in the EU, revolutions in general, it's a very difficult to understand Europe. It's a wonder there was only one one war after the second world war. "A Europe" doesn't exist, that is the problem for many Americans to understand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provo_(movement)

Germany had the extreme leftish Red Army Faction, and French and other country's had other mouvments.

Do you think the U.S. hippies influenced the Summer of '68 in Paris?
