Helen is back!

Post by Daniel Brandt » Wed May 18, 2022 5:39 pm

Helen Buyniski is back on RT.COM! It's been almost four months since her previous op-ed on RT. She lives in Brooklyn and briefly made a name for herself on Wikipediocracy because of her criticism of Wikipedia.

But Wikipedia is hardly a bastion of truth and verified information. Indeed, it doesn’t even pretend to be - the website carries a disclaimer noting that it aspires to “verifiability,” rather than truth, and that “verifiability” merely means that the largest possible number of “reliable sources” agree something is true. Wikipedia has been plagued with hoaxes since its beginning, and while it’s treated as a reliable source unto itself by many users, citing it in an academic paper would get a student laughed out of any serious university.

More importantly, Wikipedia is plagued with vicious infighting, as various factions fight for the right to be allowed to determine what - on the internet, at least - is often taken as the last word on reality. Who decides what sources are “reliable,” is in many cases left up to mob rule, with a handful of “administrators” struggling to rein in that explosion of lowercase-d democracy even while (frequently) talking up the capital-D variety.
Amazing to see a modern journalist and a millennial (even if she works for RT, a notorious Russian government mouthpiece) openly pointing out Wikipedia's internal problems. Not that it much matters: millions of people love WP and millions more seem to take whatever garbage they see on Twitter at face value.

Remember seeing her before--she pulled down her Wordpress blog recently. I'm wondering if I should try to contact Buyniski and offer her a copy of the book notes. Bet she would love to have megabytes of WP scandals and profiles of the resident crazies, albeit most of it being pre-2013 information.

Can't decide; looked at her past RT posts, and a lot of them seem to be anti-vaxxing screeds and criticisms of Fauci. With all the world's ills to write about, she can't stop coming back to vaccines. Any opinions?

For those who haven't seen Helen's Wikipedia criticisms: this is her 2018 "Rotten to the Core" essay. It is quite accurate and covers a lot of rotten.

And here's the primary Wikipediocracy thread about her. Jake blathers, people tune out.

Obviously, she is quite capable of doing deep research. But these days she seems
quite frosty and might not be interested in Wikipedia all that much, when so many
other issues need attention and comment: https://nitter.net/velocirapture23

After hearing her say she would have finished her book warning the world about Wikipedia if it hadn't been for the #OMFGVIRUS, I have to think that maybe now she'll be able to add a chapter about Botipedia. :D

I found a copy of the Chris Hedges interview of Helen Buyniski. I had to use an older version of Firefox (version 52.9.0, 32-bit) and I had to make sure the link to the page was "http://" and NOT "https://". I tried using my old version of Chrome, but I had no luck with Chrome.

The link I used on Firefox is this:
http://indoxxie.com/?arsae=https%3A%2F% ... g-elite%2F

If you get to that page without confusing your browser, you can scroll down and you will see two large pictures of Buyniski but there is no arrow in the middle of the screen indicating that you can click. Give it a few more seconds; it's probably coming from some foreign country. Scroll down some more and the third picture is smaller and almost the same, but there is an arrow in the middle of the picture that you can click on.

It's worth the trouble. Helen is now 35 years old, and she is not the nutcase the mainstream media pretend her to be. Yes, this interview was from 2018, before Covid, and maybe she has changed since then. She's all over the web with her essays and fly-by comments, but watching her live was just like the "old days."

Why did I have such a hard time finding that old interview with Helen Buyniski?

It's because YouTube screwed over Chris Hedges by deleting his entire RT archive. "RT America" went down the tube, apparently due to U.S. government pressure.

My expertise on the Internet is with static files only, and I don't have a clue about how to transfer and save video files. I suspect they take up a lot of disk space, and are beyond the means of someone like me with modest resources.

It works okay on my Linux Firefox. Not surprised it doesn't work on Chrome--people bitched about Internet Explorer 20 years ago, but Chrome is now the paragon of "evil" intrusive browsers. Idiots love it because it is "fast and sexy" or whatever. And Google has managed to frighten website coders into making everything work best on Chrome, and to hell with the others.

And YT is owned by Google. Which is running around chasing every easy dollar it can find--including government contracts and all sorts of classified work. Thus, it's a "compromised platform". I would not post any videos I make on YT at this point, political content or not.

Daniel, I wish you would put up Google Watch again. Perhaps on a foreign server, on the "dark web", or something else they can't get pulled down.

Do a search for it today and the first hit is Chris Beasley's whiny little website from 2003. Are Google's nimrods paying him to keep that crap online?

There's not much you can do. Archive sites rarely save video files. Especially if they're on YouTube. As years go by, the "public internet" becomes less anarchic and more screwed-down, for the deep and lasting pleasure of the biggest corporations. And it could be worse, you could be trying to criticize Facebook.

I don't have to. These two slides, courtesy of Edward Snowden, formerly
with the National Security Agency who now lives in Russia, says it all:
