Making Smart People Smarter and Dumb Folks Dumber

Post by wexter » Wed Feb 01, 2023 2:10 pm

Technological improvements or innovations like Wikipedia or early word processors with basic Spell Check (progenitors to today technology and texting and even ticktok) are a double edge sword. A small minority run with the technology and use it as a force multiplier to intelligence; the majority simply become dumber.

This insight is a key to Wikipedia - on balance what seems like a positive innovation amplifies stupidity. Whatever small additive value Wikipedia had in its early days has been lost to insanity.

You can see the adverse effect that technology has in terms of spelling, critical thinking, sentence structure, and paragraph organization. This is most apparent for college level courses in Wikipedia editing where students lack any and all ability to write and organize thoughts at a sixth grade level.

As you know I am enamored by Chatgpt - I can take my own complex thoughts and conclusions and within two minutes I can produce a document that would take me hours to craft (and I can drub it down to a target audience) Chatgpt will most likely take society backwards in some respects just like using a totally defective Wikipedia as a school research tool. Please write me an essay to hand in, no thinking or skills required.
Technological advancements have had a profound impact on our society and the way think. However, the impact of technology on our intelligence is a mixed bag. While a small minority of individuals use technology as a force multiplier to enhance their intelligence, the majority of people become increasingly dependent on technology, leading to a decline in their critical thinking skills.

One example of this phenomenon is the use of Wikipedia in academic research. While it may seem like a positive innovation, allowing easy access to information, the reality is that it often leads to a decrease in critical thinking skills. Students and administrators who use Wikipedia as a reliable source for research are at risk of becoming dependent on technology and losing their ability to think critically.

Similarly, early word processors like Spell Check can also have an adverse effect on our writing skills. With the availability of automatic spell-checking and grammar correction, individuals are at risk of becoming less proficient in spelling and grammar, leading to a decline in writing skills.

In conclusion, while technology has the potential to enhance our intelligence, it is important to be mindful of its potential negative effects. We should strive to strike a balance between utilizing technology to our advantage and preserving our critical thinking and independent judgment skills. As we continue to embrace technological advancements, it is crucial that we remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring that we are not sacrificing our ability to think and communicate effectively.

Main Wikipedia article of the day - all over the map neither organized or consise
Resolution Guyot (formerly known as Huevo) is a guyot (tablemount) in the underwater Mid-Pacific Mountains in the Pacific Ocean. It is a circular flat mountain, rising 500 metres (1,600 ft) above the seafloor to a depth of about 1,320 metres (4,330 ft), with a 35 kilometres (22 mi) wide summit platform. The Mid-Pacific Mountains lie west of Hawaii and northeast of the Marshall Islands, but at the time of its formation, the guyot was located in the Southern Hemisphere.

The guyot was probably formed by a hotspot in today's French Polynesia before plate tectonics shifted it to its present-day location. The Easter, Marquesas, Pitcairn and Society hotspots, among others, may have been involved in the formation of Resolution Guyot. Volcanic activity has been dated to have occurred 107–129 million years ago and formed a volcanic island that was subsequently flattened by erosion. Carbonate deposition commenced, forming an atoll-like structure and a carbonate platform.

The platform emerged above sea level at some time between the Albian and Turonian ages before eventually drowning for reasons unknown between the Albian and the Maastrichtian. Thermal subsidence lowered the drowned seamount to its present depth. After a hiatus, sedimentation commenced on the seamount and led to the deposition of manganese crusts and pelagic sediments, some of which were later modified by phosphate.

Resolution Guyot is an underwater volcanic seamount (a volcanic mountain rising from the ocean floor) located in the Pacific Ocean. It was named after the HMS Resolution, one of the ships in Captain James Cook's third Pacific voyage. Guyots are characterized by their flat tops, which are believed to be a result of erosion and subsidence following volcanic activity. Resolution Guyot is an important geological feature that provides insight into the tectonic processes that shape the Earth's crust.

Hi there,

I understand your concerns about the negative effects of technology, including the increasing use of AI tools like ChatGPT, on society's intelligence and critical thinking skills. However, I believe that the impact of technology, including AI, is not inherently negative or positive, but rather it depends on how it is used.

Just like any tool, AI can be used for good or bad purposes. While it is true that AI tools like ChatGPT can simplify the writing process, it does not mean that it is taking society backwards. In fact, AI can be a force multiplier for intelligence, helping people to better organize their thoughts and communicate more effectively with others.

Moreover, AI can also help to improve critical thinking skills by providing access to a vast amount of information that would be difficult to obtain otherwise. This information can help to challenge existing beliefs and encourage people to think more deeply and critically about complex issues.

In conclusion, while AI can have both positive and negative impacts on society, it is up to us to use it wisely and to ensure that it is used to enhance, rather than detract from, our intelligence and critical thinking skills.

Since what's being fed into AI is poisoned, what will result will be similarly poisoned. Political viewpoints determine how people interpret the input as being poisoned. AI will intensify echo chambers.
