Lawsuit: Wikipedia fired transgender worker who complained about harassment

Post by Ognistysztorm » Sun May 25, 2025 5:17 pm

https://thedesk.net/2025/05/wikipedia-f ... complaint/
A former employee of Wikipedia’s parent company has filed a federal lawsuit alleging she was fired after reporting her direct supervisor for gender discrimination and harassment.

The woman, Kayla Mae, was hired by the Wikimedia Foundation in November 2022, where she worked as a software engineer for nearly two years.

Her role allowed her to work remotely from Texas, and she was assigned to work on a team managed by Dennis Mburugu, a Wikimedia employee based in Kenya.

Within the first few months of her employment, she encountered problems with Mburugu, according to her complaint. Among other things, Mburugu asked her inappropriate questions about her sexual identity — she is a transgender female — and inquired about her medical history, Mae wrote in the complaint.

“It’s shocking that, for a mission-driven org, they seem to lack personal morals,” the staffer alleged. “It’s the most political place I’ve ever worked.”
The WMF was crazy back when Dear Leader Jimbo was still hanging around. Since they purged him and most of his early admins and buttlicks, it has apparently become even worse.

Relevant discussions at Lemmy Fediverse. Let's see how they're gonna spin it this time.
No one is responding. Predictable. Why do you waste your time on Lemmy?

Because this time around it is likely gonna cause an actual crisis of faith among those Wikipedia defenders at Lemmy since they will have nothing to spin it away or dismiss it. Instead they're likely going to pull their heads from the sand for the very first time.

And once again, I have serious doubts you (or anyone!) can substantially influence WP cult members. Despite hating Scientology, they operate in a remarkably similar way to Scientologists. And now that the WMF is a giant money pit that attracts grifters and crazies who had nothing to do with Wikipedia, the internal crisis has reached a hardpoint. This happened probably in spite of your attempts on various sites to "nail" the WMF for "misdeeds".

The only people who can really rile up the cult are the cult members. They are still circling the wagons to repel outside influences. Look at the utter drivel now posted on Wikipediocracy every week. It's almost entirely insider talk. They have been a "magical force for good on the internet" for so long, they believe themselves to be saints. Never actually were.

In other news, a Fauvist glassworks museum has been sued by one of its broken pieces.
Plaintiff's Original Complaint wrote: In particular, Mae reported that Mburugu treated her more harshly than other members of her team because of her transgender status andbecause of her neurodivergence
Among other things, Mae mentioned that Mburugu’s “transphobic microagressions” and “ableism” were “making [her] dread work.”
Anyone got a pic of this freak?

I think there are encouraging signs in the following.

Some people are indeed starting to warm up to the idea that Wikipedia is not a magical platform at all. Moreover it's been shared on Reddit by others as well.

The users at the thread at the r/ainbow subreddit, a sister subreddit to /r/LGBT, are rightfully condemning the WMF and have declared to shun them in the future.

The biases at Wikipedia can be described as anisotropic, but in the end the common denominator is that the Wikimedian community are pro-toxic, hostile to newcomers, cultish and cynical, just like Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. There are some exceptions though, but they are too insignificant to even mount efforts to produce effective change.

I feel that Wikipedia's problems leans toward systemic natures and therefore the Congress would have to take up the job to set up a committee and/or a commission to find out why it went wrong.

Over on some other site they are deeply worried that this Dennis Muthuri Mburugu might be a Christian, which would violate WMF Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC).
