Most old-timers know about "Essjay," who was the Big Boss of Wikipedia when Jimbo moved to the United Kingdom. Jimbo was essentially "hands-off" and let Essjay take complete control of the highest administrative functions. This lasted for years. No one interfered with Essjay. For the benefit of those who aren't familiar with the power that Essjay had, here is a short description of the New Yorker scandal that resulted in Essjay dropping out of Wikipedia altogether:

Good post. The Essjay debacle was a big deal. It is cited to this day as a justification for NPC editors to treat genuine expertise with scorn and disdain.

And the Essjay blowup was also when Wikipedia editing interest began to decline.

Even if Jimbo did run it, we know he cannot be trusted. I mean just look at the stuff he said in an interview about the consensus system, citing it as "we're an open democracy."

Has he not even read WP:DEM? :whambo:

Gee, you noticed -- what a bad liar he really is. Even the most crass politicians have to choose their words carefully when speaking to the press. But Wales is treated like a Little Tin God by his acolytes, the journalists know it and fear the acolytes (plus they can't be bothered to look into the giant wall-of-text mess themselves) and so they cheerfully repeat his outrageous lies about how Wikipedia "operates".

From an Australian newspaper 16 years ago:

After 16 years, has Wikipedia made any progress at all?

I vote "No". It's still a basket case and it still needs adult supervision.

It seems the guy doesn't even know his own policy. Has he not read WP:DEM?
It's like his statement was a prank. Or maybe following one's own policy is no fun after all :whambo:

Hate that guy regardless.
