Muilenburg certainly deserves to take the fall for the Max crisis, but he is also a convenient scapegoat for more pervasive cultural shortcomings. It reminds me a lot of General Electric Co., and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that McNerney and the new CEO, Calhoun, are alumni. The roots of GE’s recent crisis can be traced back to the corporate sprawl and constant push for higher profits engineered by Jack Welch. Jeff Immelt inherited that now-dubious legacy, and while he belatedly tried to rein in the sprawl, he carried on the profit-first mentality with different, but also disastrous, results. Boeing shares are rallying on Muilenburg’s ouster, but the company is overdue for a cultural reckoning of GE-like proportions.

Now he is really truly deeply, deeply sorry.

I've said before that it AMAZES me that GE has managed to survive Jack Welch. He destroyed their consumer appliance and electronics divisions and nearly killed the locomotive division. GE once dominated the electrical-power equipment business and now that's hanging by a thread. Jury's still out on jet engines and military hardware. (Bet he LOVED military contracting, it can have a built-in "invisible massive profit margin".)

If his "acolytes" are spreading thru American business as they did at Boeing, some other major corporations might be crashing soon.

The allowance for US heavy industry building military equipment is an offshoot of our fetish for corporations, because when the rubber met the road after Woodrow Wilson declared war on the Central Powers, we had state-run airplane factories making seaplane trainers for the Navy, but that was "kamma'nism" after the October/November Russian Revolution. I think we also had state-run shipyards, munitions works, and helmet factories and all of it went private by 1921. If they had allowed for state defense works with no allowance for these factories building aircraft designed by Curtiss or Boeing or Grumman or Vought, the Chinese Guomindang (Kuomintang) government would have had to lean heavier on the Germans (Heinkel and Junkers) and Soviet aviation (Sukhoi, Polikarpov, and Tupolev) instead of Boeing, Curtiss, et. al. And never forget all the outfits the Spanish Republic bought planes from during the Spanish Civil War - American, British, and French aircraft firms came off well from that fiasco. The US government pissed blood and shat molten iron after Seversky (later Republic Aviation) sold a single AT-12 "Guardsman" trainer to the Soviets in 1940, even though Seversky's barrel-like aircraft were obsolete by that point (and we had bought hundreds of the related P-35 fighter type, aircraft that were sliced to ribbons by the far more nimble Mitsubishi Zeros in the skies over the Philippines during the 1941-42 winter). The Count lost his firm over that, even though Alexander de Seversky was a one-legged White Russian WWI ace and not a fan of Uncle Joe.

I second Jack Welch being a total bag of dogshit.....how do you wreck a locomotive division? You have to be mentally damaged to the level of severe retardation to screw that up. That fucking Ayn Rand fanboy who ran Sears into the ground is another should-have-been-institutionalized "like a bawws" dumbshit and I blame Donald John Trump for that idiocy - he is still in "business" after a string
of bankruptcies that should have have ended him. Dummies think that is a good thing. Also, look up Malcolm Bricklin, the guy who gave America the Yugo - he's still trying to import cheapo Chinese cars (Chery - the Lada of Red China) for the US market. Unlike Trump, he fails constantly, but he is quiet about it and you don't know he is still out there (unless you read the auto press).
Still "Globally Banned" on Wikipedia for the high crime of journalism.

Boeing documents reveal internal communication among employees about 737 concerns, F.A.A.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/tr ... story.html
The communications “paint a deeply disturbing picture of the lengths Boeing was apparently willing to go to in order to evade scrutiny from regulators, flight crews, and the flying public, even as its own employees were sounding alarms internally,” said Rep. Peter A. DeFazio (D-Ore.), chairman of the House Transportation Committee.

Oh, you brought up a really nasty little story. Eddie Lampert is one of the worst "hedge fund operators" this country has ever seen. Rarely written about in business press because like Trump, he tosses lawsuit threats around like candy. Also enjoys screaming at his employees. And because he's a Chabad Orthodox Jew who basically pays most of the bills for his synagogue in Florida, even criticizing his miserable business practices will get you labeled an "antisemite".

Recently he shut down the Kmart in Lakeport, despite persistent rumors that it was one of the most profitable stores in the Kmart empire. Killed it off anyway and fired 100 employees. Ten days before Christmas. There is still a small Sears outlet here, and despite being the only appliance retailer left in town, there are plans to kill it off as well....

And you should see his house

We can complain about Welch and Boeing all day long. Just remember: there are worse people and crazier companies in the business world. Sometimes I wonder if this is just a minor symptom of the slow decline of the "great American Empire".

Heh.....so how's that shareholder-value thing going?

https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/14/2106 ... 7-max-2019
There was a 90 percent drop in orders for 737 models during the year, according to CNN. Boeing barely had any firm orders for the Max after the grounding in mid-March, but other models also suffered a 29 percent drop in new orders.

What a shitty industry.
though much of that had to do with some low-cost overseas airlines, like India’s Jet Airways and Vietnam’s VietJet, going bankrupt.

Boeing and airlines have been ferrying them around constantly. If you're in Seattle near Tukwila or Renton, you can see them flying around all the time without passengers.
Can confirm. Just recently learned of fr24, brought it up and there was a MAX overhead. It gave me a whole new way of looking at the urban test zone I live in.
