Archive.org and their biggest threat ever

Post by ericbarbour » Tue Mar 21, 2023 12:57 am

Today arguments were heard in the lawsuit major book publishers filed against the Internet Archive. It only took two years to get it on the calendar, apparently.....

https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/20/2364 ... t-fair-use

An aside: I watched this hellstorm for a while and wrote about it. The consensus among watchers was that the IA skated a thin edge with their "uncontrolled" CDL operation. If they lose, the publishers and their high-priced law firms could easily destroy Kahle's little playground. That would be an outrage---the Wayback archives are beyond priceless for anyone trying to figure out what happened in various dark internet corners since 1996. You can't do much hardcore Wikipedia research without it.

During this same time, however, the book publishing industry experienced so much demand that revenues rose by 12 percent, amounting to a $3 billion spike in sales by 2021, Publishers Weekly reported. Because publishers profited when the National Emergency Library was made available, Koeltl pushed back on McNamara, asking how to reconcile the surge in profits with allegations of harm caused.

As it says, if the IA can't lend books out, neither can libraries. The publishers will likely sell a lot fewer books, but obviously they can't think that far ahead. Neither can most lawyers or judges.

lol, the Genderdesk loon isn't finding any "news" in the WP "cult world" so it's time to scrape thru forum threads. Hilarious.

She/whatever has to support Kahle blindly, OF COURSE, because the IA is a donor to the WMF and supports Wikipedia unquestioningly. "Fellow travelers" and all that.

Where else can she/they go? Wikipediocracy will not really talk about this, so we are the only place left because Auggie gave up. You would think there would be far more Wikicritic websites/blogs/weird podcasts/pdf files/pastebin stuff seeing all the people they burned, but no, it's just a couple. And these Wikipedians aren't dangerous like the neo-Nazis that are researched/named by the Anonymous Comrades Collective, they just treat the website as their playground.

(I hope they don't nail the Internet Archive because of all the crap I posted to it.)
Still "Globally Banned" on Wikipedia for the high crime of journalism.

Agree! Even if the people who run it suck, it is still a very valuable resource. Also, I guarantee that the publishers are worse than IA.

Genderdesk rarely mentions Wikipedia as far as I can see. Is the blogger really a Wikipedia critic?

They say that they will appeal.

And the "this will DESTROY LIBRARIES" screeching has begun. It only applies to digital-book lending, but that seems to be the "future" of publishing. If the publishers pursue this, they will be the ultimate losers, by locking themselves into the dead-tree business.

This photo of their front door is hilarious. "UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO ALL KNOWLEDGE", but only for 2 hours on Fridays.....
