The "tough on crime" party "for families" based in "conservatism"
is now running a felon convicted of hush money payment to a porn star for president

Dilbert creator reacts to ruling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYvk_ryOg-c
Says he is "going dark", that he thinks "violence is now on the table" etc etc. He also tells his followers not to "overreact" because they still have technical advantage in polls, but he is already considering tax evasion etc despite this.

Re: The (new, straight-from-scratch) Trump thread
I'm unable to make sense of how these ("hush money conspiracy") charges/convictions are felonies or even a sign he was being immoral. This would in theory only be a crime among social conservatives, but there's a lot of social conservatives among Democrats I guess. At worst it just shows Trump is a hypocrite, that he was too concerned with personal appearance and put himself in monogamous marriage contracts as someone who would have been better in an open marriage.
i'm also unable to make sense of the delay of judgement for orange man's actual crimes, like trying to manufacture votes in Georgia.
So I assume a large number of people are just using this as a proxy for crimes Trump actually committed.
Some news media are pointing this out, that this puritanism is just something to stick on him when the extremists in SCOTUS delay judgement for actually serious crimes he committed.

Re: The (new, straight-from-scratch) Trump thread
The crime is that he and his campaign falsified internal business records at his private company while trying to cover up an effort to illegally influence the 2016 election by arranging payments that silenced claims potentially harmful to his candidacy.journo wrote: ↑Fri May 31, 2024 6:43 pmI'm unable to make sense of how these ("hush money conspiracy") charges/convictions are felonies or even a sign he was being immoral. In NY trying to cover up another crime is a modifier otherwise the falsifying business records is not a felony.
These are class E felonies which are the lowest level in NY. He probably won't get jail time and I think the judge has already said he any time he might serve would concurrently. So 1 year for each of the 34 counts is 1 year total.
This case came first which is why it's made it to court first. The election interference case in GA is delayed because the DA had an affair with the special prosecutor she hired.
So both have to do with elections. The first one is not about him having an extramarital affair with a porn star specifically which he still denies. It's hard to imagine at this point in time why he or his campaign was worried about the story getting out... other than it seems contrary to the whole gop family values thing

I just don't get what the illegal part is. I'm also not that knowledgeable in this. I think he probably committed grave crimes RE: Georgia, but this is all about adultery and falsifying records of payments for hush money years prior as you said
did he avoid having to pay a tax or a fee by classifying the hush money as legal expense rather than hush money?

Re: The (new, straight-from-scratch) Trump thread
oh you're saying this was the illegal part that made the falsification felonies
paying someone to be quiet about hurtful things is illegal in the context of elections?
;edit my family is saying it was illegal cause it was an undisclosed campaign contribution, so a technicality about election laws. Polls say around 10% of Republicans and independents would be less likely to vote for him now, regardless.

In NY it is
“conspir[ing] to promote or prevent the election of any person to a public office by unlawful means”—since Cohen allegedly paid off Daniels in order to boost Trump’s chances in the 2016 election

Re: The (new, straight-from-scratch) Trump thread
Why did people wait until an election year to make a big stink about home prices as if any major presidential candidate is meaningfully different on this issue.
I'm seeing an enormous amount of people making housing prices an election issue regardless starting a few months ago. Would've been better had people done so at any point ever, but better late than never I guess.
If people want cheaper homes, imho they will have to

THIS was still a problem before Trump and Biden, where that chart ended. It was probably just a natural effect of making a life-necessity a market commodity. People charge as much as they humanely can because people are willing to go into indefinite debt rather than die. Same thing happened with health care prices over the last few hundred years. It's not sustainable. Prices will keep going higher until people stop treating life-necessities as market commodities.
Raw data supports the existence of the long term trend as well

If people want cheaper homes, imho they will have to
- elect politicians who will stop with the zoning requirements requiring huge units for anyone who wants to live anywhere populated if we are going to keep promoting expanding the population, and more generally
- elect congressmen who promise to put forth legislation that will stop making housing or land a market commodity. It has been done briefly in America before, albeit with unreasonable requirements https://www.archives.gov/milestone-docu ... estead-act

Not that housing isn't an issue but where is it being made an election year issue? I mean as far as I know the subject of this threads entire platform is revenge on his foes
