Kamala Harris is getting "special treatment"

Post by ericbarbour » Sun Jul 05, 2020 11:07 pm

https://theintercept.com/2020/07/02/kam ... wikipedia/
https://www.sfgate.com/politics/article ... 386023.php
The Wikipedia user, who goes by the username “Bnguyen1114,” has made hundreds of edits to Harris’s page throughout the last several months, often getting into fights over the proposed edits with other Wikipedia editors, who pointed out that the language was getting pulled directly from press releases and campaign literature. “You seem to have gone through a database of press releases from Harris’s office, cataloging every single one and adding it to the article,” one Wikipedia editor said. “That is not how we write encyclopedic articles.”

Yes, Bnguyen1114 looks like a paid editor. A very incompetent one. (Drmies is still an idiot, though.)

Abuse like this happens on WP every day. What makes this situation "special" and deserving of media coverage?

What shit:
Are you affiliated with the Kamala Harris campaign in any way? If this is false please disregard this message but if it is true please refrain from editing the Kamala Harris wikipedia page due to a conflict of interest. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GLIZZY GLADIATOR (talk • contribs) 21:30, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

I am not affiliated with the Harris campaign, but I do volunteer and attend Democratic events. I've met Josh Harder, Jill Biden, Julian Castro, and Kamala Harris. I am a California Democrat. I am not employed by the Harris campaign. Feel free to ask me anything you like. Bnguyen1114 (talk) 21:42, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

After the Intercept article, it appears someone is trying to connect you with a real-life identity. If you enable email through wikipedia, I'll email you a link to the doxxing tweet. Schazjmd (talk) 22:18, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

It’s not doxxing to report facts. 2601:3C3:580:4D0:2995:F5E7:5D51:6174 (talk) 00:05, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Whether the personal information being circulated about someone are in fact their details, it's still doxing if they haven't publicly identified themselves on Wikipedia. If you have genuine concerns about how another editor is behaving on Wikipedia, you need not resort to trying to publicly out them. PrimaPrime (talk) 00:14, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

I don't know (and don't want to know) whether the claim is accurate, I just wanted to make Bnguyen1114 aware of the attempt and only offered to share the link via email. Schazjmd (talk) 00:19, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

I appreciate it. But I think I've managed to get a lid on the doxx. Thanks though. Bnguyen1114 (talk) 00:26, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Wrong, Mr. IP, reporting facts is exactly what doxxing is.

He's not very smart.

It looks like some of the promotional editing was done by the WMF itself.

Honestly its surprising katherine Maher got involved. My guess is her interest has more to due with her far left political agenda and how a scandal may look for donations than its affect on anyone article or doxxing.

Plausible. not bad for mind-reading. Welcome back to Sucks. On Reddit, the trolls claim I drove "everyone away," but the only user who actually rage-quit was CrowsNest, who has described it all on Reddit as u/JackTheJiller. I did block him, for open defiance of owner-appointed moderation, based on his intense attacks on you.

That is not particularly accurate. What happened on Bnguyen1114's talk page is explained there. I archived it, in case.

This was normal, as to this user. The missing revisions with no deletion log entries is characteristic of oversighted revisions.

Yes, the user might have a COI, which is common. Is there overall bias?

Always. It is unavoidable, though journalists and professional academics will seek to avoid it, distinguishing between fact and opinion. Wikipedia must decide what facts are notable; in theory, these decisions are made by the weight of reporting in uninvolved reliable sources, but real encyclopedias will have academics as authors, and professional editors reviewing that as well.

Wikipedia mashed this all together. There is a neutrality policy, but without reliable enforcement, it is not worth much more than the paper it is not written on. Still, many users will seek to support neutrality.

Thanks for your research.

Harris is one of two Senators from California and used to be the San Francisco DA then California Attorney General. Sure they like her politics but it's probably more specific than that. This is big power in their and their big tech donors' own backyard. How many Wikipedia biographies have had four WMF-sponsored edit-a-thons or class assignments dedicated to building them? What's the chance that Maher has never met Harris or asked her for any favors?
