YouTube and Twitter break down the same day....

Post by Strelnikov » Wed Oct 17, 2018 7:29 am

For about [s]five[/s] one hour[s]s[/s] on the evening of October 16, YouTube decided to stop working entirely - the site was running but all videos were that TV static loop, and it was worldwide. From the "Team YouTube" Twitter account:

We're back! Thanks for all of your patience. If you continue to experience issues, please let us know.

No reasons stated.

The morning of the 16th saw Twitter farting out weird chains of numbers and letters to cellphone users. The messages looked like this; Jack Dorsey the CEO of Twitter explained the issue in a Tweet:

The why, from team: “We send an invisible background notification to the app with badge counts (mainly unread notifications, DMs, etc.). The issue caused these notifications to become visible for a short period of time. We don't know exactly why, but quickly reverted.”

More proof that the most-commonly used websites in the world are more rickety than we think.

They still haven't said why YouTube crashed.

Maybe they are just keeping quiet because it's something embarrassing or secret, but it is possible they don't actually know. :?:

If they don't know how it broke how did they fix it? Reboot their streaming software entirely?

No, I think you are on to something - we know that there are large colonies of Indian and American children's video spammers on YouTube, possibly a series of 'bots dumped a huge cache of new crud videos on the system and it seized.

Dan Olson last year on "weird kids' videos."
He lays out that the whole thing is a form of advertising to the extremely young.

Sounds likely to me. Shit, I'm amazed it doesn't crash every damn day......

Wanna see something even funnier? TV producer David Simon has been having "issues" with Twitter nonsense and trolls. So he allowed none other than Mike Godwin, former WMF legal counsel, to interview him. On Twitter itself at first.

https://slate.com/technology/2018/10/da ... aps_bottom

But if that is, in fact, the given, then the last thing that Twitter should be doing is policing decorum, or trying to leech hostility from the platform. Why? Because the appropriate response to overt racism, to anti-Semitism, to libel, to organized disinformation campaigns is not to politely reason with such in long threads of fact-sharing. All that does is lend a fundamental credence to the worst kind of speech—which, grievously, seems to be the paradigm that Twitter prefers at present. It’s a paradigm that offers two basic choices: Ignore the deplorati—which allows the dishonesty or cruelty to stand in public view and acquire the veneer of credibility by doing so. Or worse, engage in some measure of serious disputation with all manner of horseshit, which also grants trash the veneer of credibility. In 1935, the reply to Streicher or Goebbels quoting The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and asserting that Jews drink the blood of baptized Christian babies is not to begin arguing that “no, Jews do not drink Christian baby blood” and deliver a long explanation of The Protocols as a czarist forgery in chapter and verse. The correct response is to call Julius Streicher a submoronic piece of shit, marking him as such for the rest of the sentient, and move on to some more meaningful exchange of ideas. So it is with Twitter. If I’m gonna exist there, I’m not going to let the most rancid shit stand on my feed as if it’s plausible, but nor am I going to treat it as deserving of serious argument. I’m gonna call it out quickly and block—and do so with as much flair and performance as I can so at least the process won’t be boring. But effectively, what I am doing is marking the [land mines] for the rest of the platoon to block as well. It’s a permanent, quotidian task—but given that Twitter is not going to become a responsible news organization that fact-checks the commentary and regulates it on that basis, what else can we do?

And THAT is why Our President is allowed to splutter at his base on Twitter. And at the same time, allowing people to use (or sometimes misuse) the #metoo tag. It is an unhinged medium like Wikipedia (something Godwin knows all about), professing "decorum" and pretending to "police" while allowing lunatics to run loose and attack others. Of course Godwin will never admit that....

For years I've been calling Jack Dorsey a slimy character and his creation a sewer. Now here's David Simon, one of the world's leading TV producers and owner of a MacArthur grant and a mountain of Emmy awards, saying the exact same thing.

Look, at this point the only good stuff on Twitter comes from people like Tom Scharpling (@Scharpling), Weird Twitter master Wint@Dril, and the Chapo Trap House people; Will Menaker, the show's "leader", is being sued for the tweet "Rat faced baby killer and Trump PR homunculus, Jason Miller, is suing my girlfriend for $100 million, cool!" because said girlfriend Katherine Kruger wrote a piece on Splinter reporting that court documents in the custody battle between Miller and A.J. Delgado revealed that Miller had previously dated a stripper in Orlando, Florida whom he had gotten pregnant. Miller's brilliant solution was to drop an abortion pill in a smoothie, bring it to "Jane Doe" and have her drink it. She nearly bled to death from the induced abortion, the fetus died, Doe spent days in the hospital, and Miller was forced to pay a sum of money while she signed a non-disclosure agreement. (Funny how all the Trumpers use NDAs for everything.)

.....Besides Menaker, Chapo wiseass Felix Biederman has been doing Weird Twitter for years as @ByYourLogic, and the great Tolstoyan brain of the outfit Matt Christman who gave us such gems as "This is the stupidest day in American history, a record that will be broken by every subsequent day in American history." when Trump was inaugurated; "It’s gonna rule when Susan Collins is re-elected because the fine country dullards of Maine split their opposition vote between a Democratic health insurance dracula and a crusty Independent tugboat captain who wants to bring back original recipe Moxie.", after the Kavanaugh train wreck. Aand there's also Virgil Texas, being extremely online.

Meh, "weird Twitter" isn't really weird enough, because it doesn't make up for shit like this:

https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/20/180 ... ployee-spy
According to the Times, western intelligence officials contacted the social media company, saying that the Saudi government was “grooming” one of its employees, Ali Alzabarah, “to spy on the accounts of dissidents and others.” Alzabarah worked at Twitter beginning in 2013 as an engineer with access to user accounts, and was convinced by Saudi intelligence officials to look into several accounts.

Once alerted, Twitter reportedly placed Alzabarah on administrative leave while an investigation took place, and while “they could not find evidence that he had handed over Twitter data to the Saudi government,” he was fired at the end of 2015. The company then notified a “few dozen accounts” that they might have been targeted. Following his dismissal, Alzabarah returned to Saudi Arabia.

After the sickening slaughter of Jamal Khashoggi, who lost fingers while still awake, you're Goddamn right.

Twitter needs to go down.
