And people think the Dutch are "polite and reserved". Hah.

PS do this in California without "proper permits" and the sheriff will throw you in jail. Even if you do it in the middle of nowhere.

They are. Except with new year. And what should the sheriff think about this, a local tradition in some parts of Holland, Eric?

I expect someone would get killed and the State of California would outlaw carbide sales. It was probably "overlooked" due to sheer obscurity. Some lunatics still buy and use carbide lamps. For what I don't know. Carbide is very expensive in the US, an LED lamp would be far cheaper, more reliable and simpler to use. And safer.

Here is a explanation in English about this strange Dutch tradition. It is on the you tube cannel Survival Guide to the Dutch what I really love!
There was a item about the channel today in the AD, a Dutch newspaper. (Don't forget to switch on the sound, it's in English) And it is really great, Holland seen trough the eyes of a foreigner. He did it really in a great, way with a lot of humour. And I have to say, he knows the Duchies very, very well. And who knows, who knows, the first scene explane why professor Drmies is how he is.
Will this shock the sheriff too, Eric? What do you think?

This is also a great one. How to survive Dutch 'Koningsdag" Kingsday. Two days a year Holland change in a complete madhouse, with New Year and Kingsday.
And the rest of the video's are a must for who wants to know the country of Drmies better. And yes, madam gender desk, the leak of lady's toilets in the big city's is stipulated. (#9)
