Catch-all Google thread

Post by ericbarbour » Sat Sep 29, 2018 2:17 am

I saw this today and DAMN is it funny.
https://slate.com/technology/2018/09/go ... ality.html
All the data it collects is the real source of Google’s dominance, making the company’s services ever better at providing users what they want. Through autocomplete and the personalized filtering of search results, Google tries to anticipate your needs, sometimes before you even have them. As Google’s former executive chairman Eric Schmidt once put it, “I actually think most people don’t want Google to answer their questions. They want Google to tell them what they should be doing next.”

Twenty years from now, with two more decades of progress, Google will be even more accomplished, perhaps approaching a vision Brin expressed years ago: “The perfect search engine would be like the mind of God.” People are coming to rely on these tools, with their advanced artificial intelligence–based algorithms, not just to know things but to help them think.

All reported with a completely straight face.

Not mentioned: the Goog's toxic codependency on Wikipedia content, its occasional outright censorship of search results, its secretive manipulation of research in the search field (to improve its own public image), its friendliness with the Chinese government......

https://www.vox.com/2018/9/25/17901252/ ... na-project

.......and its highly ungodly tendency to suck personal information from users of its online services for aggregation and resale. Using even its private-label web browser, now the world's most popular. "People weren't happy" hah.

Google+, their attempt to compete with Facebook, was already a failure. But they kept it online because there were "paying commercial customers" using it.

Now you can kiss the public Google+ goodbye. Because......

https://techcrunch.com/2018/10/08/google-plus-hack/
The company decided against informing the public because it would lead to “us coming into the spotlight alongside or even instead of Facebook despite having stayed under the radar throughout the Cambridge Analytica scandal,” according to an internal memo. Now Google+, which was already a ghost town largely abandoned or never inhabited by users, has become a massive liability for the company.

And they only went public because the Wall Street Journal forced their hand.....if the jerks who run Google are "so smart", why do they keep screwing up so massively?

"The Death of Google" from a Google fan
https://lauren.vortex.com/2018/10/08/th ... -of-google
Though the practical impact of the breach seems to be negligible, Google played directly into the politically-motivated hands of the lying Google haters, who have already been screaming for Google’s blood and for its executives to be figuratively drawn and quartered.

These kinds of Google communications strategies are giving the evil haters even more ammunition to use for false accusations of political user censorship, they give the EU additional excuses to try fine Google billions extra to enrich EU coffers, and they give massive energy to the forces who want to break up Google into smaller units to be micromanaged for political gain by politicians and those politicians’ minions and toadies.

What's a "Google hater"? Is that anything like a Wikipedia critic, who refuses to bend to the common demand that Wikipedia be "venerated as a modern miracle"?

this has to be one of the worst interviews I've ever seen. They are talking about serious subjects but look like a couple of stoned hippies babbling. Covers Google, FB, Twitter, antitrust etc. etc.

My homepage has been Bing ever since I got this device.

It took me six months to even notice I was not "Googling" , but "Binging". Now I know, I cannot think of a single reason to take the two seconds it would take to change my home page.

Maybe these Google lovers need to realise how very little brand identity they have, where it matters.

As for personalised blah blah, I can't be the only person who finds these things easy to spot, and my only reaction is irritation at their arrogant presumption that they are even trying to "anticipate my needs".

Lol this really goes to show brand loyalty, but of course this applies to any internet site. If Wikipedia was suddenly replaced overnight with "BingFacts", I expect 99% of the readers would pay no attention whatsoever. (as long as it looks much the same). This is partly why so many mirrors exist, no-one can tell.

It can be made to look exactly the same. Just change the logo and name. The disadvantages of open source / creative commons.

There's so little difference among the major engines, does it really matter anymore? They all copy Google or scrape Google content or whatever.

I use DuckDuckGo when possible because they claim to NOT save and aggregate search histories--something which Google and Bing are famous for. I also avoid using the Google Chrome browser because it's undoubtedly sending personal info back to Google servers.
