It's basically a fork of the Mastodon system, only far more restricted and intolerant. Started by the notorious "Jester", whom you can read about in the Rachel Marsden article from the book wiki. Yes, he fucked with Marsden's Wikipedia article, because he didn't like her. So she later "outed" him.
Announced on, of course, Metafilter.

The FAQ looks like something Wikipedia's leading assholes would think up:

As someone on Mefi said:
>Wil Wheaton (@wilw), Joy Reid (@joyannreid), Rick Wilson (@therickwilson), Rosie O'Donnell (@rosieodonnell), Mark Cuban and Portugal the Man (@PortugalTheMan) have already joined.

>Wait...so no one from one of those banned countries is allowed on this new platform? Some of the most important voices out there in the social world are coming from those countries.

I already know how this will unroll--people will try to talk freely about things relating to the Jester and his hacker buddies, and they will proceed to ban people and destroy posts. Soon it will be a screwed-down and dysfunctional near-dead community.

At this point it's not even 15,000 accounts.
Who "Portugal. the Man" are. It's like if social media had been around in the late '80s and Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians were walling themselves off from it.

Still "Globally Banned" on Wikipedia for the high crime of journalism.
