Enterprisey

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia ... erprisey_2

Why are Wikipedians so impressed with this guy's technical skills? His talk page is just one long list of bug reports, all apparently bugs being discovered in software that is already live. To be fair, he does make sure to clarify what tools are still being beta tested, but in a place like Wikipedia, where the one eyed man truly is King, that really doesn't mean anything, because any old fuckwit will just grab it and use it....

And given that link, seeing this was hilarious......

The guy seems too much of a flake to have achieved anything significant for the cause of Wikipedia coding.

It goes against all these theories that Wikipedia editors are largely geeks, people who could surely tell when someone is simply blinding the simpletons with science, unless, of course, this RfA is nothing more than just some kind of reward for dedication and attitude, as opposed to a balanced assessment of the risk versus rewards of granting Adminship to someone whose technical skills were genuinely as good as is being claimed or perceived.

Easy, he's probably snorkling asses deeply on an IRC channel. "Competence" in Wikiland means "kiss my bottom and we'll give you adminship". It was easy in the early days--today it means snorkling dozens of total asswipes (for years!) just to pass an RFA. It's a corrupt little "society".

Yes Enterprisey is a favorite IRC cabalist, almost all the scripts he has made are for people on IRC. ;)

I just wonder how shit at coding you would have to be, to be unable to gain Adminship simply because the muggles are in awe of your skills, and more importantly, your willingness to devote your time to Wikipedia.

Think about it. This guy is being given this pretty powerful position, simply because he's a nice guy, and uses Wikipedia to engage in his hobby, the pursuit of his hobby being the majority, if not the only, reason he needs the tools. Why is that enough for coders, but if a nice person whose hobby is writing, or even copyediting, they get the third degree around a presumption that they don't need or deserve the tools?

I am amused at the thought perhaps this is all they have, granting Adminship is the only way the Wikipedians can think of to reward people who are dedicated and helpful. It sure beats a barnstar.

Whatever the truth, RfAs like this won't help their major resource issue in this crucial area. It's a fair bet is guy isn't so nice he will put aside his hobby to do the sort of Admin work that is actually hard, stressful or time consuming, basically all the shit that is perma-backlogged. I could be wrong, but when their RfA is nothing more than a powder puff coronation, how are you supposed to judge?
